Asphalt Mix Pavement (P-401)

Reference USDOT-FAA: AC No: 150/5370-10H

P-401 Asphalt Mix is intended to be used for the surface course for airfield flexible pavements subject to aircraft loadings of gross weights greater than 30,000 pounds (13,600 kg). P-401 mix may also be used as a stabilized base course.

This TransCalc tool can be used to plot the particle size grading of the sample considered. The input data can also be saved in the form of a pdf report. The plots are interactive and can be zoomed in or out and hovered over for additional data display. The plot can be saved by using the toolbars located on the top right of each plot. Please make use of the help texts provided in each input cell for further guidance on the usage of this tool.

Bulk (Dry) Specific Gravity (Gsb) of Aggregates

The ratio of the oven-dry mass of a unit volume of aggregate (including both the impermeable and water-permeable void volumes) to the mass of the same volume of water.Determined as per ASTM C 127 and C 128 or AASHTO T 84 and T 85

Apparent Specific Gravity (Gsa) of Aggregates

The ratio of the oven-dry mass of a unit volume of aggregate (including only the impermeable void volumes) to the mass of the same volume of water. Determined as per ASTM C 127 and C 128 or AASHTO T 84 and T 85.

Effective Specific Gravity (Gse) of Aggregates

The ratio of the oven-dry mass of a unit volume of aggregate (including both the impermeable void volumes and the waterpermeable voids not filled with absorbed asphalt) to the mass of the same volume of water.

Binder Specific Gravity (Gb)

The ratio of the mass of a unit volume of binder to the mass of the same volume of water. Determined as per ASTM D70 or AASHTO T 228.

Theoretical Maximum Specific Gravity (Gmm)

The ratio of the oven-dry mass of a unit volume of asphalt mixture (including the volumes of the aggregate and binder only) to the mass of the same volumeof water. Determined as per ASTM D 2041 or AASHTO T 209.

Bulk Specific Gravity(Gmb)

The ratio of the oven-dry mass of a unit volume of asphalt mixture (including the volumes of aggregate, binder and air) to the mass of the same volume of water. Determined as per ASTM D 2726 or AASHTO T 166.

Air Voids (Va)

Total volume of the small pockets of air between the coated aggregate particles throughout a compacted paving mixture, expressed as a percent of the bulk volume of the compacted paving mixture.

Voids in the Mineral Aggregate (VMA)

The volume of the intergranular void space between the aggregate particles of a compacted paving mixture that includes the air voids and the effective binder content, expressed as a percent of the total volume of the specimen.

Voids in the Coarse Aggregate (VCA)

The volume between the coarse aggregate particles, which includes the volume of filler, fine aggregate, air voids, asphalt binder, and stabilizing additive (if used).

Percent Binder Effective (Pbe)

The functional portion of the asphalt binder that coats the aggregate in the asphalt mixture but is not absorbed into the aggregate, expressed as a percentage of the total mix mass.

Percent Binder Absorbed (Pba)

TThe portion of the asphalt binder that is absorbed into the aggregate, expressed as a percentage of the total aggregate mass.
